About Ostby & Barton Co.
Ostby & Barton Co., a jewelry manufacturing company, was founded in 1879 when Engelhart Cornelius Ostby and Nathan B. Barton formed a partnership. Previous to their partnership, Ostby trained to be a jeweler at the Royal School of Art in Norway. He furthered his education and expertise with six years of apprenticeship working in his hometown of Oslo. The two went on to be one of the best known jewelry makers of the first half of the 20th century. At the turn of the century, they were the biggest producer of gold rings in the world and were known for their intricate designs and attention to detail.
In 1912, Mr. Ostby was on a European buying trip with his daughter when he booked their return trip on the ill fated maiden voyage of the Titanic. Mr. Ostby sadly lost his life in the tragic sinking, but his daughter lived on to advance the business until the mid 1950's with the help of her brother.
